Richmond’s First Fridays Arts District returns Friday, October 2, with galleries, shops, live performances, food, makers, and other experiences throughout the Arts District. Admission to the district-wide event is free, with festivities running approximately 5–11 p.m.
That makes it an excellent Kourted date anchor.
But the goal is not:
“Let’s walk around First Fridays.”
The goal is:
Create an evening where she feels creative, curious, and considered.
Feeling: Creative + Curious
Budget: $25–$75
Kourted objective: Shared discovery
A creative date should give both of you things to notice, react to, and talk about.
So instead of trying to visit every gallery, choose two or three stops.
The date should feel like discovery—not a scavenger hunt you are rushing to finish.
Send:
“I planned something creative for us Friday. We’ll explore a few spots in the Arts District, grab something to eat, and finish somewhere quieter. Wear something comfortable enough to walk in. I’ll handle the route.”
Now she knows there is an actual plan.
Once you arrive, give yourselves one small challenge:
Each person chooses one piece of art, object, or creation they would actually take home if money and space did not matter.
Then explain why.
That tells you something about one another without making the date feel like an interview.
A second playful option:
“Find one thing here that reminds you of me.”
Now the environment becomes part of the connection.
Because the event itself is free, use the budget for comfort and the second chapter.
A simple target:
| Date Element | Estimated Cost |
|---|---|
| Food truck or casual meal for two | $25–$35 |
| Drinks | $10–$15 |
| Small local item or dessert | $5–$15 |
| Parking | $0–$10 |
| Target total | approximately $40–$70 |
Do not spend money simply because admission was free.
Use it to improve the experience.
Pay attention to what catches her eye.
If she repeatedly returns to one maker’s booth or mentions loving something small, consider buying an inexpensive item near the end of the evening.
Not because she needs a gift.
Because it shows:
I noticed what interested you.
Keep it modest.
A postcard, small print, bookmark, handmade treat, or inexpensive local item is enough.
The Arts District is stimulating.
Your second stop should not be.
After 60–90 minutes of exploring, transition to:
This is where you talk about what you just experienced.
Try:
“What kind of creativity do you wish you made more room for?”
Or:
“If you could learn one creative skill just for fun, what would it be?”
The art gives you something to discover.
The transition gives you somewhere to connect.
Do not become attached to completing the route.
The emotional objective matters more than the checklist.
Anyone can wander First Fridays.
You designed the experience because you:
That turns:
“Want to go to First Fridays?”
into:
“I planned something creative for us.”
Plan the date. Build the look. Lead the moment.
She may remember a painting.
She may remember a strange sculpture.
But what matters most is that she remembers feeling curious, relaxed, and included.
She will remember how she felt.
She will feel Kourted.
If you were building an Arts District date in your city, what would your final stop be?
