Don't Just Go to 2nd Street Festival—Build the Date

September 30, 2026

By Beyond Excellent Consulting LLC

Richmond’s 2nd Street Festival gives you almost everything you need for a great date: music, food, culture, movement, and plenty to discover together.

But the event is only the anchor.

The Kourted experience comes from what you build around it.

For this date, I would design around:

How she should feel: Adventurous + Connected

Budget: $25–$75

Experience objective: Shared cultural discovery

Start with a simple plan

Instead of:

“Want to go to 2nd Street Festival?”

Try:

“I planned something fun for us this weekend. We’ll spend some time exploring 2nd Street Festival, try a few things together, and then slow things down somewhere quieter afterward. Wear something comfortable for walking. I’ll take care of the rest.”

That already feels more intentional.

Don’t try to see everything

The festival spans multiple blocks and includes several music stages, food vendors, Artists Row, a marketplace, and other activities.

Choose two or three things you want to experience together.

For example:

  • One live performance
  • One food stop
  • Artists Row or the marketplace
  • One short walking tour or neighborhood discovery

The goal is not to “complete” the festival.

The goal is to enjoy it together.

Make the food interactive

Instead of ordering separate meals immediately:

“You choose one thing for us to try, and I’ll choose the next.”

Share a few items.

Compare favorites.

Try something neither of you has had before.

That creates little moments of discovery without forcing conversation.

Use the culture to inspire conversation

Jackson Ward is historically significant and was once widely known as the “Harlem of the South.” The festival specifically celebrates that neighborhood history and culture.

A natural question might be:

“What part of your city or hometown do you think people overlook?”

Or:

“What kind of local culture do you wish you experienced more often?”

Those questions fit the environment and keep the conversation organic.

Add one thoughtful detail

Keep it simple.

If she mentions loving a particular artist, food item, or handmade piece, pay attention.

Maybe you:

  • Buy a small print or local item she admired
  • Grab one dessert to share
  • Bring bottled water beforehand
  • Pack a lightweight seat cushion or foldable blanket if you plan to sit for music

Thoughtfulness works best when it solves a need or shows that you noticed something.

Build the quieter second chapter

After the festival, do not add another big event.

Change the pace.

Try:

  • Coffee
  • Dessert
  • A short walk
  • A quiet patio
  • Somewhere nearby to sit and talk

That is where the date shifts from public energy to personal connection.

Ask:

“What was your favorite part of today that you didn’t expect?”

Simple.

Specific.

Easy to answer.

Budget it intentionally

Because admission is free, your $25–$75 budget can go toward the experience:

Date ElementEstimated Cost
Shared food$20–$30
Drinks$8–$15
Dessert or coffee afterward$10–$15
Parking or transportation$5–$10
Small thoughtful gesture$0–$10
Target totalapproximately $45–$70

Free admission does not mean the date should be unplanned.

It just gives you more room to spend intentionally.

Why This Is Kourted

Anyone can attend the 2nd Street Festival.

What makes it Kourted is that you:

  • Chose the emotional objective
  • Planned the timing
  • Curated the festival instead of wandering
  • Shared the food
  • Used the environment to create conversation
  • Added one thoughtful detail
  • Built a quieter second chapter
  • Stayed attentive to her comfort and energy

That is the difference between:

“Let’s go to the festival.”

and:

“I planned something for us.”

The event is the anchor.

You design the experience.

Plan the date. Build the look. Lead the moment.

She may remember the music.

She may remember the food.

She may remember the artist you discovered together.

But more importantly:

She will remember how she felt.

She will feel Kourted.

Your Turn

If you were building this date, what would you choose as your second stop after the festival: coffee, dessert, a walk, or somewhere quiet to sit and talk?

Start Planning With Intention

Kourted helps men plan thoughtful dates, build the right look, and lead the moment with confidence.
